The free Cineplex passes from General Mills are now in effect, so let the free movies begin. 😀
So far I have seen 3 movies.
On Tuesday I took the kids to The Green Hornet. I forgot that it was being shown in 3D and had to shell out an extra $3 (each). What an evil, unnecessary cash grab. In no way, did that movie need to be shown in 3D. BAHH, this 3D crap is starting to get on my nerves. Despite the 3D annoyance, the movie was pretty good. Jay Chou did a pretty convincing job considering he has no martial arts training.
Last night was a double wammy with The Mechanic and The Dilemma.
The Mechanic was good. I was worried that it would be another Transporter movie, but it wasn’t. I thought Statham and Foster both did a great job.
The Dilemma was also very good. Probably not one you need to see in theaters, but why not when it’s free. 😉

My fake birthday just passed as far as Disney Movie Rewards is concerned. I was hoping they would offer me another free movie like they did on my first fake birthday, but sadly no.
What was my special fake birthday bonus you ask? 100 points.
That’s right, I can get 50 points just for entering the code “cool”, but when it comes to my fake birthday, Disney spares no expense. 🙄

Sometimes it’s not easy being a Canadian on Goozex. Especially when you factor in the exorbitant rates charged by Canada Post. Would you believe that depending on the size and weight, it sometimes costs less to ship to the US then it would to ship across the country? On the other hand, if it weighs more than 100 g and you need to ship to the US, it costs over $5 (without tracking or insurance), which makes you think twice about listing 100 point games.
Anyway, the other day I was looking through my list of requests and I went and checked out my place in line for Red Dead Redemption for PS3. A small tear came to my eye as I noticed I was still in 85th place despite having had the game on my list for months. Heck, when I first added it, it didn’t even list my place in line, it simply said “Long wait…”; so I guess 85th place was an improvement.

It’s that time of year again. What time of year you ask? Well, every year around this time, General Mills and Cineplex team up and offer free movie passes on select boxes of cereal. Every year the offer gets a little less lucrative, but this year appears to be identical to last years offering, which is still pretty good.
Basically, you buy select boxes of General Mill cereal (Cheerios, Fibre1, etc etc) and on the inside of the box is a movie pass. Like last year, the value changes depending on in which month you use it (thus the “Choose your free movie offer!” tagline). February is a free movie, March – free small popcorn or candy, April – 2 for 1 movie and May – free small drink.
Obviously, using the pass in February for a free movie is the best value.

In a previous post I mentioned buying a bunch of games from Rogers Video as part of their boxing day sale. One of those games was a PS3 game called Enslaved: Odyssey to the West developed by Ninja Theory.
Some of the games that I bought that day were purely for trade on Goozex, but this one I actually wanted to play. I don’t remember where I first heard about it, but at some point prior I had decided that I wanted to play it and added it as a request on Goozex.
Sadly, I was in 80th place in line on Goozex (the unfortunate case with new games). So imagine my surprise when I found it at Rogers Video for a mere $13.33 (buy 1 get 2 free at $40).

I ended up seeing a few movies in theatres this holiday season, but of the movies that I saw, the one I wanted to see the most was Tron: Legacy.
I loved the original Tron as a kid, so my opinion of it is a little biased and perhaps tinged with nostalgia.
Regardless, I tried to go into Legacy with an open mind.
It’s actually pretty good if you try not to think about the minor details. There is a lot more fantasy than science in many of the ideas, but that doesn’t make it any less fun.
The action scenes are pretty amazing, the special effects are spectacular and the music was great.
I went to a theatre showing it in 3D and honestly the 3D was unnecessary. There were a few times where the effect was noticeable but it is in no way necessary and doesn’t really add anything to the experience.
Prior to watching Legacy, I forced my kids to watch the original. They say they liked it but that the “graphics” were really bad. They both agreed that Tron: Legacy was better than the original.
I’ve read that the game Tron: Evolution adds to the story and acts as a prequel to Legacy. I guess I will have to see if I can get a copy. As for another sequel, I personally hope that Legacy is successful enough to give Disney the go ahead.

Ok, so most reward programs suck pretty bad. The points are usually not worth a whole lot and even when you have enough for something, there is often nothing worth getting.
The Disney Movie Rewards program really isn’t that much different, as in, it’s pretty sucky.
Basically, when you buy Disney stuff at retail (CD, DVDs and Blu-Rays), they include a coupon code inside. You take that code and enter it on the Disney Movie Rewards site to collect points. CDs get you around 50, DVDs – 100 and Blu-Rays between 125 to 200 points.
Once you have enough points, you redeem them for useless garbage like stickers and posters. If you happen to collect a whole bunch of points (900+), you can even redeem them for Blu-Rays (although the selection is really, really bad).
It’s also possible to get bonus points for doing questionnaires and from periodic bonus codes (for example, the code “cool” will get you 50 points right now).
Anyway, despite the program’s suckyness, you may want to sign up anyway.
That’s because periodically you get hooked up with FREE movies.

I hope everyone had a great holiday weekend. I tell you, nothing beats News Years Eve as a better excuse to party.
Think about it. Every other holiday requires either presents (Christmas), activities (Halloween), family dinners (Thanksgiving/Easter) or family gatherings (Labour Day). Obviously, nobody wants to party on Remembrance Day (Veteran’s Day in the US). I guess Canada Day comes close (similar to Indepenance Day in the US), but most folks go on vacation. No, not News Years Eve. The only requirement is to party. Everything closes early and the next day is a statutory holiday. A most perfect combination. 😀
Too bad it only happens once a year. 🙁

After hearing about the deal (which started on the 24th), I headed on over to the nearest location. I ended up going to 3 stores in total. Here is what I ended up getting…..

In the same vein as the Windows Mobile Emulator round-up I did a few weeks ago, I ended up doing the same type of thing while looking for an Instant Messaging application for my LG IQ. I mostly wanted to use GTalk, but figured I might was well get something that can also handle Facebook IM and MSN.
Sadly, many of the IM applications for Windows Mobile are no longer being updated, but that doesn’t mean we are out of luck. You can read the full round-up here.
