Access Netflix.com from Canada without a VPN

A lot has been said about the content differences between Netflix Canada and Netflix US since it launched in Canada last year.  For the most part Netflix Canada has made significant improvements, but there may be times when you just want to watch something that is only available on the US site.

A Google search on the topic will likely bring up sites describing how to use a VPN server to redirect all of your traffic and make it appear as if you were somewhere else (in the continental US for example).  The major issues with this method are that access to a good VPN server can get pretty expensive and you are limited to the bandwidth provided by the VPN server (both speed and/or amount of data).  Being bandwidth limited is not really ideal for a video streaming service.

Luckily, there is a better option.  Several companies now offer DNS redirection for the sole purpose of tricking video streaming sites into thinking that you are located in the US.  Instead of redirecting all of your traffic, like a VPN, these services provide you with a new DNS to use and whenever you access one of the supported video streaming sites, they will reroute the return location check to make the streaming site believe you are in the US.

Since only DNS requests go through the service, your bandwidth is not limited and your IP address remains the same.

I’ve tested two sites that offer this service.

Unblock Us – http://unblock-us.com

&

UnoTelly – http://unotelly.com

Unblock Us offers a free 1 week trial and costs $4.99/month after that ($4.17/month if you pay by the year).

UnoTelly’s basic package is always free, but the Premium package, which includes Netflix, is $4.95/month.  Their Gold Package adds [adult swim] & FXnetworks for a total of $7.95/month.  UnoTelly also provides an installer in case you are uncomfortable make changes to your DNS settings.

Some will argue that the security offered by a VPN outweighs the increased cost.  Either way, these services provide easy access to the huge quantity of content normally restricted from Canadians.

Feel free to post comments if you have any experience with these services or if you know of any others.
