PAX Prime 2015 – Sold out in 55 minutes

PAX Prime Sold Out

At least according to when I received my text message tweets from the PAX twitter account

Here I was, riding my Motorcycle down the road, heading to lunch with the wife.  From my pocket, I can hear Moto Assist yell out from my Moto G that I received a new text from Twitter.

I only follow one account in Twitter and that’s the PAX feed.  I didn’t think it would be the registration text since only last week we were told….

@Official_PAX: To assuage any heart attacks, just remember we won’t launch tix until later in May.

It’s only May 7th, which I wouldn’t consider “later in May”.

Once I get to the restaurant I check the message and see this…

WTF!!  I am not prepared for this.  I click the link and hope I’m not too late (it’s now 4 minutes after I received the alert).  Luckily, I wasn’t.  After a 20 minute wait, I got in and ordered two sets of tickets.  I tried to order 2 more sets using my wife’s phone, but by the time I got though, Saturday was sold out.  I guess I lucked out this time around.

I Ordered a Dell Latitude E6540

Well, on a whim I ordered a Latitude E6540 from Dell the other day.

I’ve been waiting for a decent laptop with a Haswell processor and discrete graphics since July and the E6540 seemed to fit the bill.  It wasn’t cheap ($1700), but it included an Intel i7-4800MQ Quad-core CPU and an AMD Radeon HD 8790M GPU.  It would also work with my Dell pr02x dock, had a 1080p anti-glare screen and included a 500GB SSD (or so I thought).

I didn’t want to spend that much, but I figured for a 500GB SSD (worth about $400) it was worth it.  After placing the order I read the specs closer and realized it came with a 500GB Solid State Hybrid Drive, not a 500GB Solid State Drive.  Man, rarely does one work make such a difference.

Without the 500GB SSD, I decided it was not worth $1775 to me, maybe closer to $1400 – $1500.  I sent a request to cancel it (2 hours later) but the rep had left for the day.  It will probably be delivered today or tomorrow.  I’ve already notified Dell that I will be sending it back without opening it.

And so my quest for a new laptop continues.

Finally Finished Deus Ex: Human Revolution

Well, somehow it took me 120 hours (according to Steam), but I finally finished Deus Ex: Human Revolution this weekend.

I was EXTREMELY thorough.  Every computer or security panel that could be hacked, I hacked.  Regardless of whether I had the code or not.  I also played Pacifist and avoided killing anyone my entire play-though (or so I had thought, see below).  The benefit was that I had an insane amount of XP by the end.  I was able to upgrade almost every single augmentation.

Long before I reached the 2nd boss I had already upgraded everything that I wanted to.

Once the credits started rolling, though, I realized that the Pacifist achievement never popped up.  I was also expecting the Foxiest of the Hounds achievement as well, but that also never came.

Turns out that I killed some people during the prologue (before you get augmented or are given the option of a non-lethal weapon), so I lost the option within the first hour of playing.

I know in my heart that the moment I was given a tranquillizer gun and given the option to not kill people, that not a single human was injured by my hand.  I was extremely careful and continuously reloaded from my save files whenever something went wrong.  It just sucks that I lost the achievement before I even knew you could play non-lethal.

PAX Prime 2013 – We have Tickets!!!!

Well, as reported by Polygon on April 24th, the PAX organizers reviewed their list of ticket purchases and cancelled those purchases for tickets in excess of the allowed limit.  At the time, it was reported that those tickets would go back on sale at some point in the future.

Cut to last night at 7:03 PM PST, where I received the following Tweet-2-SMS message from PAX…

@Official_PAX: Reclaimed tix to Prime 2013 here http://t.co/X5pUDsD3Co Max of 2 sets per order, multiple orders per person or household will be cancelled.

Knowing that these wouldn’t last long, I immediately jumped online and was able to pick up 2 sets of single day passes (there didn’t appear to be any 4 day passes available).  A few minutes later I received the following….

@Official_PAX: Well that was fast. All the reclaimed tickets are now sold out. (7:15 PM PST)

I don’t imagine there were many tickets available, so I thank my lucky stars that I was able to get tickets for my son and I.  Hopefully, a few other folks who were originally upset that they wouldn’t be able to go were also able to secure a few tickets as well.

A big thank you to the PAX organizers for cracking down on excess ticket orders and giving a few other people a chance to attend.  I also have to thank Twitter for getting the tweet out to me in time to take advantage of the offer.

PAX Prime 2013 – Sold Out In 6 hours!!!!!

So I go out of town for a few days for work and what happens?

PAX Prime sells out in 6 hours and I don’t even find out until today.  WTF is that about!!!!

Thank You Steam

Hello Steam or Valve or whoever, I just wanted to say thank you.  I used to be a software pirate.  No, I didn’t actually crack and upload games, no I was too lazy for that.  I just downloaded already cracked games instead of buying them.  I did that for years I’m afraid.  Even games that you created like Half-Life and Portal I’m sad to say.  If it makes you feel any better, I own both of those games now.  Actually, I own the entire Half-Life collection, plus Left 4 Dead 1 & 2 and Portal 1 & 2.

It’s all thanks to Steam!

Honestly, though, I don’t just buy from you guys.  I sometimes buy from Gamefly and Amazon, but those games are often on Steam anyway, so we’re all good.  I really just buy from whoever is cheapest.  Come on, I may no longer download pirated software, but I’m still a cheapskate.  Hey, I’m just being honest.  If I couldn’t get my games from you guys at 75% off, I would probably still be downloading pirated games.  I think we can both agree that at least this way, somebody gets paid.  Amiright?

Anyway, thanks again.  You keep selling stuff crazy cheap and I’ll keep buying it.

Project Fedora Kickstarter Success!!!

In case you missed it last week, the Project Fedora Kickstarter was a complete success.

The target was actually hit June 7th, but things really exploded on June 6th.  That was the day of “Update #19: The Magnificent 7!”

See, after 22 days of modest growth the Kickstarter was pretty much on target to hit the $450K goal shortly before the end date.  Most days were averaging around $9K.  It was then that the folks at Big Finish Games posted their 19th project update.

In this update, we were notified that as a result of hitting 4500 backers, the Magnificent 7 (7 unknown high donors) would be donating $4K for every $6K raised starting at $386K, as a means to leapfrog the way to the $450K project goal.

I don’t know what they were expecting, but things exploded!!!  Within minutes $20K had been raised and within hours we were within $20K of the goal which was achieved the next morning.  it was all very exciting as you could imagine.  Overall almost $100K was raised in that 24 hour period.

In the end over $600K was raised (including Paypal donations) which is pretty good compared to projects like SpaceVenture & Pinkerton Road.  I would have preferred a lot more, but considering $600K was raised by only 7000 backers (SpaceVenture & Pinkerton had over 10K backers each) I guess we can’t complain.

Damn you Steam!!! Ughhh Fine, Take My Money

I’ve been trying to hold off on buying Deus Ex: Human Revolution for some time.  I really want to buy it, but I already have too many games to finish before I pick up another.  I guess I technically already own a copy on OnLive, but that’s not the same.

I almost pulled the trigger last week when GameFly had the regular version on for $7.50.  That’s a great deal, but the DLC (The Missing Link) was not included and was still listed for $15 (for just the DLC).  I decided to let it go and work on my backlog of games I already own.

Well, wouldn’t you know it, only hours after the GameFly sale ends, Steam decides to tempt me even further by putting the whole collection up for sale at 75% off.  That’s $15 for all three games (including the Augmented Edition of Deus Ex: HR), the DLC and both add-on packs.  Damn you Steam!!!  You evil temptress of gaming goodness.

Project Fedora – $300K Raised After 2 Weeks

It’s been slow going this past week, but I’m happy to report that after another week of pledges, the Kickstarter to raise funds for a new Tex Murphy Adventure Game has passed the $300K milestone.

We’re only 66% of the way there and in reality we really want to raise a lot more than the $450K Kickstarter goal, but $300K in two weeks is still pretty darn good.

If all goes well, we can maintain this pace and then far surpass $450K with the (hopefully) inevitable burst of pledges that seem to come right at the end.

If you haven’t already made your pledge, honestly, what are you waiting for?

No, seriously, go pledge.  😀

Sony Says No Android 4.0 for Xperia Play

According to a post made on the Sony Mobile Blog site, the Xperia Play will be the only 2011 Xperia model to not get Android 4.0 – code named Ice Cream Sandwich.

This is in spite of the fact that they explicitly stated that all 2011 Xperia phones would get the update back in November.
