Want to watch Veronica Mars in Canada for free, just like our US neighbours?
Well tough luck!!!
That is unless you pay for US VPN access or use DNS re-direction/unblocking.
I’m not going to discuss using a VPN. They are generally expensive and slow.
I am going to discuss using DNS re-direction though, because that’s what I have been using to watch Veronica Mars for the past week.

I posted a short while ago that i was disappointed that Stargate Atlantis was not on Netflix Canada and had to resort to using a hack to access Netflix USA in order to watch it.
Well, I guess I missed the notice, because Netflix’s license to carry Atlantis expired yesterday. Meaning, it’s no longer there.
This doesn’t mean it will never come back, but Netflix will have to negotiate a new contract with the content owners.
I hope they do this soon. I was only half way through season 2 and it was getting pretty good. I would hate to have to waste a bunch of time downloading it illegally. At least with Netflix, somebody is getting paid.
Many moons ago I mentioned that I was interested in watching some recent TV show additions to Netflix Canada. In particular Farscape and Stargate SG-1. Both shows that I missed the first time that they aired.
Well, shortly after that post I started watching Farscape. It was great, loved it.
Then I started watching Stargate SG-1. Another great show, loved it.
In the case of Farscape, it was cancelled in the final season without notice, so it ends on a cliffhanger. Luckily, a 2 part mini-series was released to wrap everything up. Unfortunately, it’s not available for streaming on Netflix, so I had to download it illegally. 🙁

Apparently, my family and I are some of the few people who haven’t already watched the TV series “Lost”. Everytime it comes up and I mention to friends that I have never watched it, I always get disbelief and then “well, you have to watch it!”.
Don’t get me wrong, I’ve always wanted to watch it, I just never got around to it.
Well, imagine my surprise when I logged in to Netflix a little while ago and was greeted with a nice big picture of “Lost” and the words “recommended for you”. According to What’s New on Netflix Canada, it went live on April 15th.
We are already on Episode 6 and kids can’t seem to get enough. Who would have thought a TV show about a bunch of strangers stuck on island in the midle of nowhere would bring a family together.
A lot has been said about the content differences between Netflix Canada and Netflix US since it launched in Canada last year. For the most part Netflix Canada has made significant improvements, but there may be times when you just want to watch something that is only available on the US site.
A Google search on the topic will likely bring up sites describing how to use a VPN server to redirect all of your traffic and make it appear as if you were somewhere else (in the continental US for example). The major issues with this method are that access to a good VPN server can get pretty expensive and you are limited to the bandwidth provided by the VPN server (both speed and/or amount of data). Being bandwidth limited is not really ideal for a video streaming service.

So, it turns out that only days after I posted details on how to trick the Android Netflix app to work in Canada, Netflix Canada goes and approves the app for use in Canada.
This means that you should now find the Netflix app in the Android marketplace assuming you are running Android 2.2 or higher. I tested the new version on my HTC HD2 running Android and it worked perfectly. 😀
So, it has been a little over a year since Netflix launched their streaming video service here in Canada. Initially the selection was pretty sparse. Since then, more and more content has been added ever month; both good and bad.
What’s the selection like a year after launching? Well lets take a look at some of the newer releases by category….
Action & Adventure:
Iron Man 2, Unstoppable, Knight & Day, The Last Airbender, The A-Team, Machete, Gamer and G.I.Joe
No Strings Attached, Jackass 3, Date Night, Megamind, Morning Glory, Dinner for Schmucks and Extract

This past week I have been playing with Android 2.3 on a HTC HD2 from T-Mobile. It doesn’t support 3G with Roger Wireless (incompatible frequencies), but it’s still an amazing phone and WiFi still works fine.
One of the apps that I was excited to get is the Netflix streaming app. It’s been available for iPhone for some time, but it was only last month that Netflix released an app compatible with all 2.2 & 2.3 version Android devices.
To my surprise, I couldn’t find Netflix in the Marketplace. It turns out that Netflix Canada hasn’t approved the app yet, so if you are able to access it via the Marketplace (using a weblink for example), you will get an error that the app is not available for your region.
Luckily, it is still possible to get it working in Canada if you don’t mind a few extra steps.
